A Passion For Cycling & Science

Meet Bumalicious™ & La Domestique, LLc.

When you begin riding, first it's, “get a good pair of chamois shorts”, then it's, “get a good pair of Bib shorts," and, of course, “you need chamois crème”. That began the search for something that would work.

There was Brand X, Y, and Z, that were supposed to keep my bum from chafing and getting sore. However, the performance never matched the advertisements or my expectations. Some of my cycling buddies swore by particular products, which when I tried just didn’t work. I wondered if being 210 lbs. and 6’2” had something to do with it? NAH!

Spin classes were painful. Sitting for races on Zwift was painful, and long distance rides were painful. In 2017 I asked Jeanne Anne, "There has to be a better way, right?” She said, Yes! That question and experiment brought us to this business!

She began mixing Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Almond oil, and of course beeswax with a multitude of essential oils. Each handmade batch and testing took time. Three years and about 10,000 miles on the road and in front of Zwift and I thought we had the right formula. And, of course, I did share along the way… The founder of my racing club, RCubed, was “forced” to try it. He did. Then he said, "It’s amazing, more than amazing, I use it on all skin conditions, and they are repaired. You need to share this with the world.” And so the journey of invention for all natural products began.

About Our Ingredients

The raw ingredients in all La Domestique athletic body care products are certified organic, and are born from either a nut, fruit, vegetable, grain, plant, flower, bud, herb, leaf, bark, or stem.  Amazing, right?  Maybe not when you appreciate the powerful healing punch provided by nature.

Our goal with Bumalicious was to create a chamois crème that would prevent dermal abrasion, keep the skin area that touches the seat from hurting, burning, or going numb from constant movement, pressure, and tissue breakdown. Ingredients: Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and the essential oils of Tea Tree, Lemon, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang.

In the Fall of 2020 when we started to road test Bumalicious we discovered that family members and friends were using the product for running, moto sports and equestrian activities. Bumalicious was also being used for all kinds of skin related concerns, from diaper rash, to dry skin, and severe dermatitis, such as eczema and psoriasis.

We realized that these dermal conditions, as well as real healing after long hours in the saddle, required other ingredients and essential oils, and so was born Healing Balm Dermal Repair. And, who knew it was fabulous for healing tattoos, keeping tattooed skin moist and maintaining their true colors. Ingredients: Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Coconut Oil, Emu Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and the essential oils of Frankincense, Lavender, Geranium, and Helichrysum.

And then there are those sore muscles. Cyclists need a great muscle balm. How about one that can be used on the knees, thighs, and quads before getting on the trainer or hitting the road, or track. Enter Peppermint Cooling Crème. It is also beneficial when rubbed into the balls of the feet to deal with those hot spots. And, of course, amazing after hours in the saddle. Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Emu Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil and Arrowroot Powder.

La Domestique, LLc believes in natural solutions and the power of holistic ingredients. We will never use lab created compounds with names you cannot read or pronounce.  Nor will be ever use petroleum based ingredients or stabilizers. If you have tried other cycling and athletic balms you may have experienced products that contained ingredients that were not compatible with your skin, or they did not perform effectively for your strenuous activity.  We have found countless solutions to athletes issues by solely using only certified organic ingredients

Beeswax

Beeswax has been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect, while it locks in moisture and helps to treat skin conditions, such as rashes and eczema. It has also been bound to be superior to other barrier creams that are usually mineral oil-based. Our Beeswax comes direct from the Withers Mountain Honey Farm in Flint, Michigan.  Jim Withers is an ATP Zwift teammate of Ken’s.

Coconut oil

Oils That Do Double Duty
Coconut Oil is amazing, comes from the meat of the coconut and is sourced in either India, the Philippines or Sri Lanka. We use it in our cooking, to condition our hair, and on our bodies because it is rich in vitamins A and E and fatty acids. It is in our products because it serves as a humectant and emollient, and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing properties. Coconut oil has been shown to not only improve skin’s health but to impact dermal conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema, which increases our natural collagen.

Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO), also commonly referred to as Coconut MCT Oil, is made up primarily of medium-chain triglycerides, or MCT’S, Caprylic (C8) and Capric (C10 providing fatty acids for healing. FCO is a rich source of vitamins A and E, with Vitamin E an essential micronutrient due to its antioxidant and bioavailability as a carrier oil for therapeutic essential oils. Ours is sources in either India or Singapore. Fractionated coconut oil is made from regular coconut oil.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa Butter, extracted from the cocoa bean, contains plant polyphenols, which have anti-
inflammatory, immunodulatory and DNA repair properties, and can help skin that has been
overexposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The botanical agent, theobromine, plays an important role in the transmission of intracellular signals, meaning that it stimulates antioxidant activity in muscle function, making it an amazing ingredient for our Peppermint Cooling Crème. Our cocoa butter is sourced from South America, Southeast Asia, or West Africa

Mango Butter

Mango Butter is collected and refined from the seed kernels of the mango tree. Ours is sourced from the Netherlands. Mango Butter is a highly effective emollient, packed in fatty acids that soothes dry and chafed skin, as well as treats skin rash, dermatitis, and eczema. Mango butter also relieves itchiness associated with insect bites or dry skin and has been known to soothe out scars and wrinkles.

SHEA Butter

Shea Butter is extracted from the nut of Shea trees found in Central and West Africa.  It is high in Vitamins A, E and F, strong antioxidants for skin repair, and a rich source of fatty acids to soften and rejuvenate the skin, while also producing natural collagen.  Shea Butter also contains cinnamic acid, which serves not only as an anti-inflammatory but a protection against UV radiation damage.

EMU oil

Emu Oil is extracted from the fat of the Emu, a large flightless bird originally native to Australia. It is filtered, fully refined, and Certified by the American Emu Association. Emu Oil is made up of essential fatty acids and antioxidants, such as vitamins A and E. Due to its smaller particles, emu oil has increased enhancement and carrier capabilities.  It penetrates deeper into the skin and carries other ingredients with it to stimulate cell regeneration, an important factor in dermal healing.

Essential oils

Essential oils are effective in healing because the nano particles can enter cells, whereas medications are larger and can treat only symptoms. An agent, anti-infective can act against infection, either by inhibiting the spread of an infectious agent or by killing the infectious agent outright. It can pass the blood-brain because the agent contains brain oxygenating molecules that can kill viruses and bacteria and clean receptor sites so that cells can communicate and heal. What is even more fabulous is that essential oils have been used for thousands of years.

Tea Tree essential oil, derived from the Melaleuca tree, is a powerful antiseptic that fights bacteria and inflammation. Lemon essential oil is extracted from the peel of fresh lemons using a cold pressing process that pricks and rotates the peel as the oil is released. Among its amazing properties is in killing bacteria and viruses and reducing inflammation. It has been shown to be effective as a calming and mood-improving agent, and more effective at relieving stress than lavender essential oil.

Lavender essential oil contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce reduces and act as a natural hydrator to repair dry skin. The amounts we use in our products also serve to help prevent and repair wounds.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is derived from the star shaped flowers of the Ylang Ylang tree. It works to reduce pain and inflammation and promote wound healing. Another factor is that it acts as a natural insect repellent.

Frankincense essential oil has been referred to as the King of Oils. It is a powerful astringent and anti-inflammatory, known as a healing oil to rejuvenate damaged skin. It has been shown to heal skin imperfections and wounds. Frankincense is one of a class of essential oils that can pass the blood-brain barrier.

Geranium essential oil contains antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties making it beneficial for reducing acne breakouts, skin irritation, skin infections and wound healing. By helping skin stay conditioned, and soothing irritated skin, it fights against skin affected by harsh weather conditions and environmental stresses.

Helichrysum essential oil, sourced from Bosnia, is best known for its restorative properties. Studies have suggested that helichrysum essential oil can help promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation. Treating skin inflammation is a long-standing traditional use of helichrysum oil, with skin infections a common side effect of a wound not healing properly. The antimicrobial properties of helichrysum can help prevent infection, which helps the wound heal in turn. Further, helichrysum essential oil may be able to slow or stop the growth of a range of bacteria, including ones that cause  staph infections .

Peppermint essential oil is in a class of oils that can create conditions where unfriendly viruses and bacteria cannot live. The natural menthol content provides an analgesic effect on the skin. Peppermint essential oil can reduce muscle inflammation and help soothe joint pain, as well as cool down hot rashes. It is also great for headaches.
